Pave compensation alternative without the HRIS hookup
A Pave compensation alternative makes sense when you want market salary data but either cannot share your HRIS data, or your company is not the venture-backed tech profile Pave's dataset centers on. Paid Pave plans are reported at roughly $8 to $20 per employee per month. Wagelist builds bands from public data with nothing to connect.
As with our Payscale comparison, this page is honest about both products, including that Pave is live today and Wagelist is in early access. The wider field is covered in our roundup of the best compensation management software, and if you are weighing a traditional survey instead, see Mercer salary benchmarking and what a salary survey costs. The other startup-focused option that pairs cash with equity is Carta Total Comp.

What Pave actually is, and who it is right for
Pave is a compensation platform built around a real-time dataset sourced from its customers. Companies connect their HRIS and cap-table systems, and in exchange get benchmarking against aggregated data from other connected companies. The benchmarking tier is genuinely free in cash terms; the price is your compensation data. On top of that sits a paid suite for comp planning, merit cycles, total rewards statements and pay communication.
For venture-backed tech companies this model is strong: the dataset is fresh, dense for software roles, includes equity benchmarks, and reflects exactly the peer set those companies compete against for talent. If that describes you and your leadership is comfortable with the data-sharing arrangement, Pave is a credible default choice.
Where Pave does not fit
Three situations push teams elsewhere. First, the data-sharing requirement: some founders, boards and legal teams simply will not connect payroll and cap-table systems to a third party, and without connecting, the free tier is not on the table. Second, the dataset skew: if you run a manufacturing firm, an agency, a clinic or a nonprofit, benchmarks drawn from venture-backed tech companies describe a market you do not hire in. Third, weight: if you need five defensible bands and a posting-ready range, a comp-cycle platform is more product than the problem calls for.
What Wagelist is, stated plainly
Wagelist is self-serve salary benchmarking software for 10 to 200 person companies of any industry, currently in early access. There is no HRIS connection and nothing to share: bands derive from public U.S. BLS wage statistics covering the whole economy, adjusted with a documented multiplier table you can show a board or auditor. Planned pricing starts at $99 per month. The band mechanics are explained in our salary bands hub, and the free pay band calculator works today without an account.

Who should still pick Pave
Pick Pave if you are a venture-backed tech company, you want benchmarks drawn from that exact peer set including equity, and connecting your HRIS is acceptable to your leadership. The free tier is real and for that profile it is excellent value. Pick Wagelist if you will not share HRIS data, hire outside the venture-tech bubble, or want a documented public-data methodology you can defend to a board. Planned tiers are on the pricing page.
